Horsing Around
Horses are amazing! Smart, intuitive, curious and, like all animals, have individual personalities. My dear friend, Karen Swezey, caught this one acting silly on camera. Pretty much the best horse photo I’ve ever seen!
Then my buddies, Janice and Alex took me to a party at a horse ranch. While the guests ate, drank and danced - a barn full of horse heads looked on with curiosity, seeming to want to join in on the festivities.
Clark and I also had a fun experience on the bike trip with a horse named Sadie. Inquisitive and playful she started our day off with a laugh. Here’s a short excerpt from my new book, “Spontaneous Revolutions: Seeing America one Pedal at a Time.”
An unnervingly close horse whinny woke us from a sound sleep. Startled, I sat up quickly and came face-to-face with big brown eyes. Was I dreaming? What was a horse’s head doing in our room?
I came to my senses and realized our cabin adjoined a corral and the curious animal had put her head through our open window to check us out.
“Well, hello, girl,” I said, stroking her long face.
Clark laid on his back, staring up the horse’s nostrils, still slightly confused. Then, burst into laughter.
Sadie (I saw the name on her lead) whinnied and pranced around to show off for us, always coming back and poking her head in for more attention. We played hide-and-seek with her; concealing ourselves behind the curtains. She liked the game, ne-e-e-e-i-ghing her delight when she figured out where we were.
